This page just shows different variation of pulse rifle grenades. Some are seen in the film, (very briefly) other are made from written
material and alien related technical web sites. There do seem to be slightly different version of these, depending where you look,
but these just struck me as looking the best versions to make.
M40: High Explosive Grenade.
This is the one most people recognise, as its used and seen quite a lot in the film Aliens.
The
high explosive grenade is a self-arming projectile, which after hitting a target or travelling 45 feet detonates, casuing a 15 foot
kill zone. The impact fuse can also be set and used as a hand thrown grenade.
M51A: High Explosive Air Bursting.
This one is featured very briefly in the film, when Pvt Frost first detects Newt on the motion
tracker and they go looking for her. He has these and the M40 on both sides of his tac-vest.
This grenade contains a fused centre
section with a fragmenting warhead at each end. On impact the ejection fuse fires, propelling the grenade 6 feet into the air, where
it explodes showering fragments in a 15 foot, 360 degree radius. Can also be set and thrown manually.
M38: High Explosive Dual Purpose
This one is also featured very briefly in the film, when they are in the command bunker, discussing
ways of fortify it, Newt goes to pick one up off the table, and Hicks tells her not to as it’s dangerous.
This grenade contains
a shaped charge encased in a pre-scored liner. On impact the shaped charge explodes focusing the blast forwards, and is capable of
penetrating 6 inches of armour plate. A second charge then detonates inside the penetrated target killing those inside or destroying
it.
M108: Canister 'Buckshot'
This one is not featured in the film, but is shown in aliens related technical manuals and various
alien related web sites.
This grenade is a short range anti-personnel device with a 100 foot maximum range. It contains a scored
plastic liner filled with metal shot. On firing the plastic liner is propelled forwards where it splits open sending its contents
onwards in a cone shaped pattern.
M230: Baton ‘None lethal crowd control’
Again not shown in the film but listed in alien related books and web sites. I think
this one expands the role of the USCM from just a grunt, to a multi role soldier, used not only for combat, but passive duties as
well.
A primarily none lethal projectile use in urban crowd control. It is composed of a soft rubber nose mounted on a rigid
plastic body, and used to incapacitate, although can be lethal if fired at point blank range into the head or abdomen.
M46 High Explosive Incendiary
This is not shown on any web site or written material; it’s my contribution to the Pulse Rifle
Grenade arsenal. Of all the grenades listed a HEI version was missing. Being such a widely used all purpose round in the real world,
just seemed something the USCM would use.
The HEI grenade is specially designed to pierce lightly armored units, fragment, and
ignite combustible material inside. The primary roll is to either ignite the occupants of the unit, or quickly deplete the oxygen
suffocating said occupants or forcing them out.
M36A CN20 Nerve Gas
This one is not featured in the film, or books it’s a custom made grenade dedicated to Vasquez, as she suggested
rolling in couple of canisters of CN20 nerve gas to kill off the aliens. We thought it would be good to have a grenade version,
just in case .
The principle behind this grenade is the main black caplet is fired towards the enemy, and when it lands or hits something
the red button in the nose is depressed and the gas is released through the ring of holes round the base.
M72A1 Starshell
This one is not featured in the film, but is shown in aliens related technical manuals and various alien related
web sites.
This grenade is designed to be fired upwards to a maximum height of 600 feet. It contains a 5 second fuse which then
ejects a parachute and ignites at the same time a magnesium flare. It slowly drifts back down producing enough light to illuminate
the battlefield for 45 seconds. End cap denotes flare colour and is available in white, yellow, red and green.
M76R Rocker Propelled Grenade
This one is not featured in the film, or books it’s a custom made Rocket Propelled Grenade version. I have a chum who reckoned no USCM would be complete without a version of this modern day weapon.
The green rocket part
fires off and is propelled forwards far further than the normal grenade can travel, by a small solid fuel engine in the rear half. On clearing the barrel the fins would open to aid stability on its way to either a ground based or airborne target. On
impact the nose cone would deform setting off the HE charge.
M60 White Phosphorous
This one is not featured in the film, but is shown in aliens related technical manuals and various alien
related web sites.
This grenade contains white phosphorus filler with impact detonating fuse. On impact it releases a cloud of WP particles
which ignite on contact with air, and burn for up to 5 minutes producing a dense cloud of white smoke. WP particles burn hot enough
to ignite any flammable materials and on contact with flesh cauterize the wound. If surgically removed once re-exposed to air will
reignite and explode from the wound.
M67A Anti-Riot Crowd Dispersal
This one is not featured in the film, but is shown in aliens related technical manuals and various
alien related web sites.
Filled with CS gas, a non-corrosive, non-persistent irritant. It is designed to incapacitate groups of unprotected
targets, and with prolonged exposure causes respiratory seizure. The gas is aerosol dispersed and produces a cloud approximately 30
metres across. Effects from the gas can last for up to 15 minutes
M115 Napalm
This one is not featured in the film, or books it’s a custom made version. I have a bandoleer that holds 12
grenades, so this is the last to be made. Why, I just love the smell of napalm in the morning.
This grenade fires the entire
red section off. Halfway through its flight, it’s designed to start to tumble end over end so it smashes on impact. The
contents then splatter in a forward facing cone, and it’s ignited by the white phosphorous charge at the base. Effective against hard
or soft targets.
